Ripples from SMS was started by Mrs. Marjie Smith.
She was awarded the Ripple Effect Teacher Award by the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation in October of 2023.

Marjie Award

We can’t change the world, but we can change little pieces of it and hope for a ripple effect.”
               ~ Margery Barancik

Mrs. Smith would like to follow Mrs. Barancik’s lead and has created “Ripples from SMS”.

It was created to help SMS students and staff “give back” to their community -- to look at how they can help, where they can help, where they can make a difference and what they can do to better our community.

Each quarter during the school year, SMS student(s) or staff member(s) will be recognized for their efforts - with a cash award
of $250.00. It may be given to a single person or a group. Half of
the award money will go to the organization/group benefiting from the student’s/staff’s efforts and half of the award money will go to the recipient/honoree.

We hope to continue to create a Ripple Effect from SMS to our Sarasota community.

The inaugural quarter for Ripples from SMS will finish after
Spring Break. Students, staff, and parents are welcome to nominate an SMS Ripple Creator”.

Please email Marjorie.Smith@sarasotacountyschools.net with your nomination. Please include their name, grade level (if appropriate), organization/group they help and WHY you believe they should be an SMS Ripple Creator”.

A decision will be made and announced at the beginning of April. Our SMS Ripple Creators” will be announced on the SMS News and will be showcased on this website.

The Mission of the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation

To make a meaningful difference in the areas of education, humanitarian causes, arts and culture, environment, and medical research in Sarasota and beyond.

Five Sarasota County educators were recently named 2023 Ripple Effect Award winners by Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation and Sarasota County Schools.  Each award recognizes teachers for their impact on their students, schools, and community and came with a check from the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation.

The Ripple Effect Awards Program honors the chosen profession of
Margie Barancik, who was a teacher and lifelong supporter of education. Awards are presented to five Sarasota County Schools teachers twice a year, in September and May, to mark the respective birthdays of Margie and Chuck Barancik.

Recipients of the Fall 2023 Ripple Effect Award were:

  • Marjie Smith, Sarasota Middle School
  • Elizabeth Donofrio, Venice High School
  • Kim Hunt, Venice Elementary School
  • J. Ivey, Sarasota High School
  • Robert Whipple, Triad Alternative School

We congratulate all of the Ripple Effect Winners!

Mrs. Katie Muller deserves this quarter’s SMS Ripple Creator Award!

She has been our son’s counselor for 3 years at SMS and her partnership with us has made a difference! She is responsive, patient, thorough and caring.

Mrs. Muller consistently goes above and beypnd to help parents and students. Her enthusiasm for her students is evident in every interaction. She wants them to succeed!

We could not be more grateful for all that she has done for our son (and for us as parents!). We will miss working with her.
